It is our mission to prepare every child for the demands of Global Citizenship by providing the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to move fluidly between two or more dramatically different languages and cultures.
“These kids are really understanding the teacher. They're conversing. ... And this is preeschool. If they're immersed all the way through 12th grade, they'll have instant college and instant jobs. ... This could be the model for statewide expansion.” - Michael Flanagan, State Superintendent of Schools.
Philosophy
To draw from the best of the Eastern and Western learning traditions to provide children with a rich and supportive learning environment.
Why?
In the year 2025, the global economy will look very different than it does today. Globalization will change how, where, and for whom people work. These global economic changes will alter the world’s employment landscape. To ready the world’s young people for the future, we need to prepare them for the new global society and economy with a new type of education. Education for Global Citizenship prepares young children for these challenges by educating students in the languages and cultures of two distinct societies and by providing students with the skills to move fluently between cultures.
Chinese is a language spoken by more than 800 million people. China’s economy is growing and China is rapidly becoming a major force in international trade and commerce. Fluency in Mandarin Chinese will be a major asset for people entering the labor market over the next decade. Developing fluency in Chinese as a second language is a major challenge, as Mandarin is a non-cognate language with no phonemic or alphabetic clues. The EGC Schools model starts children learning Chinese at an early age to help them develop complete Chinese literacy by grade 12.
How?
In the EGC Schools model, we have combined the best of both Eastern and Western pedagogy in a learning environment that immerses students in both languages and cultures. This blending allows children to move between different cultures, languages, and educational philosophies as part of their school day. In the Western classroom, students will be immersed in the English language and a child-centered learning environment. In the Eastern classroom, students will be immersed in the Mandarin Chinese language and a knowledge-centered, teacher-directed learning environment.
What?
The EGC Schools curriculum is designed to cover multiple areas of learning including reading, writing, math, science, and global studies. The EGC Schools learning standards were assembled from a variety of international resources that represent the best practice standards and will promote rich learning experiences. |
